Despite its small geographic area there are several strong institutions within the study area (Fig. 1). St. Agnes Continuing Care Center offers long term care, wellness, renal dialysis, home care, skilled nursing and transitional care. Not only does St. Agnes have a prominent physical presence on Broad Street, where it occupies a city block, but it is also one of the largest employers in Newbold, drawing employees and patients from outside of the immediate area.
In addition to several small storefront churches, St. Thomas Aquinas on Morris Street between 17th and 18th Streets, is a Catholic Church with a long tradition of community involvement. St. Thomas includes a sanctuary, rectory, and a school serving children from the neighborhood. As a reflection of the racial mix in the area, St. Thomas Aquinas has multilingual staff and worship services. Its Asian Social Service Center has been meeting the needs of local immigrants in the community for 20 years.
There are two youth recreation centers in Newbold whose civic associations have become the locus of civic activity in the community. The Di Silvestro Recreation Center is located in Newbold North (at Morris and 15th), while the Guerin Recreation Center is located in Newbold South (at 16th and Wolf). Both these organizations meet monthly and draw regular crowds of between 30 and 35 participants. The recreation centers also provide after school activities and playgrounds for neighborhood children. Attached to the Di Silvestro Recreation Center is a branch of the Philadelphia Public library. this library is adjacent to the Morris Street entrance to the Broad Street Subway, making it accessible to the surrounding community.
Beyond Newbold’s immediate boundaries are a variety of institutions that impact and serve the community (Fig. 2). there are several public schools in the area including McDaniel and Girard Elementary Schools and South Philadelphia High School. Another health service institution is the Methodist Hospital division of Thomas Jefferson Hospital providing community based patient care on South Broad Street.
Several large religious institutions surround the study area, such as Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Monica Catholic Church, Tasker Street Baptist Church and Redeemer Baptist Church, which act as locations for community support and organizing. the Point Breeze Performing arts Center is both a cultural resource as well as community development force for the larger neighborhood and the Point Breeze CDC is also a driving force in the area. South Philadelphia H.O.M.E.S. and Diversified Community Services are two of the main agencies providing key services for the residents of the area. There are no banks located within the study area, but there are several clustered just across Broad. These include Prudential Savings Bank, Wells Fargo Bank, Citizens Bank, and United Savings Bank.
